A Few Free Apps for Law Students

Of the thousands of apps available in the Apple App Store there are some which are a must have. Below are a few which I recommend giving a try….what do you have to lose, these are free.

  • LexisNexis Get Cases & Shepardize® allows you to search cases and access summaries if you know the case citation
  • LawStack includes all the Federal Rules and Constitution in a single, searchable app.

  • Fastcase lets users search case law and statues. The mobile free law library saves your search history and allows you to save documents, too.
  • BARBRI app allows students enrolled in the program to access lectures, questions, and outlines to prepare for the bar exam.

  • Wikipanion is a great resource for the quick term lookup or clarification.

Facebook and Microsoft joining forces…

Microsoft is working with the biggest sharing network we have all come to know, Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg announced today that Microsoft is tapping into Facebook to create Docs.com. The app, created by Microsoft’s FUSE Labs, is a way for Facebook users to share and collaboratively edit Microsoft Office documents.

Microsoft has been on the move for quite some time now to migrate their Office to a cloud environment. I am curious is collaborating with Facebook is going to help bring the giant back into the playing field with Google Docs.

Microsoft partnered with Facebook to build Docs.com to show what could be done with Facebook’s new Open Graph API and Social plugins. For instance, Docs.com will begin using Facebook’s new auto-login feature it announced earlier today so that users won’t even need to click on a Facebook Connect button to get started.

Google Voice – A great service many don’t know about.

Google Voice

Google Voice is a relatively new free service being offered to those who request an invite. The free service allows you consolidate all of your phone numbers into one and being in control of features normal Phone Carriers charge for.  For a full list of all the features and to request your evite click here. The following video does well to explain the service and what it has to offer.

I personally have been using Google Voice for about a year now and have found it to be a very valuable resource. I love how when I am expecting an important phone call from someone I simply give them my Google Voice number. When they call it dials my work number, home phone and cell phone. If I still miss the call it will then transcribe their voicemail and send me an email. I also use it to call internationally for a low cost. The amount of features it offers and the ways you can customize it makes this one of my favorite service offered by Google.

DropBox – 2GB of Free Online Storage From Anywhere

DropBox is a free online storage service offering an easy way to share and store your files. You can access your files from any browser or mobile device.  DropBox also keeps track of different versions as you edit and manipulate files, allowing you to revert back to a previous version.

Syncing is performed automatically without the hassle of copying and pasting files.  You can also share files with others and view your photos in a gallery. Sometimes individuals may work on different computers day to day as well as work across different operating systems such as Windows, Mac and Linux.  DropBox supports all of these platforms.

Backing up your data is important, but let’s face it most people don’t. DropBox does the work for us. Watch the screencast to see exactly how it works.

Internet Explorer – Latest Security Flaw

Internet Explorer   A serious flaw was recently found in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer allowing hackers to infect over two million users around the world. This flaw allows malware to be installed automatically by simply visiting a website which has been compromised.  Once this malware is on your computer is can be used to steal sensitive and personal data like passwords. So far over 10,000 websites have been compromised by the flaw and is expected to grow. This is a great time to double check that your antivirus software is up-to-date and that Automatic Updates is turned on.  Today Microsoft released a patch for this flaw and is ready for download.

Do you have an Antivirius installed?

A laptop with no antivirus is just asking to get hijacked. A laptop with an outdated antivirus is just as insecure. Most new laptops will come with a free trail antivirus and only lasts for a short time.  It’s easy to get busy and put off renewing or purchasing a full subscription. There are free versions available as well.  It’s vital for a pc to be uptodate with it’s ‘Windows Updates" and have an antivirus.

There are two main types of antiviruses available.  You can purchase standalone antiviruses or a ‘Suite’.  Suites offer more than just antivirus protection, they offer real-time scanning for spyware, firewall functionality, and usually more features for scheduling and configurations.

Whatever type of antivirus you install on your system make sure it is receiving updates regularly and setup a schedule for it to scan your system regularly. This takes but a few minutes to setup and is worth it.

Here is a link to a plethora of Antivirus programs.

Is your laptop receiving Windows Updates?

It’s important to make sure your computer is successfully receiving Windows Updates. Updates/patches are released on the second Tuesday of each month and is known as Patch Tuesday.  A critical patch may be released at any time.

You can always perform updates manually and by doing this you can confirm if your "Automatic Updates" is enabled.  Open your Internet Explorer browser and go to Tools --> Windows Updates.

On the right hand side you should see the notification Automatic Updates are enabled:

If Automatic Updates is not enabled it will ask if you want to Turn on Automatic Updates:

It doesn’t hurt to periodically check to make sure your system is patched.
